Impact Hub İskenderun

İskenderun, dating back to 333 BC, is one of the most important port cities in the Mediterranean, which has never lost its strategic importance despite various natural disasters and pandemics. The acceleration of industrial development in the region was followed by various migrations. Industry areas developed around the historical center through time, without touching the project site. The variety of the surroundings and not being touched have led to an inbetween situation in this area. “Being in-between” has been the main point of the development of the impact hub proposal for İskenderun.

The maps from the 19th to 21st century are overlapped with site outlines which gave the information that formed the base of this proposal. In order to support the city's growth through time with industrial, residential, and cultural areas without touching the site, I created the visuals below which analyze the surroundings from a different perspective.

Customs Laboratory was proposed as an add-on program to the project. The intensity of logistics operations and the expressed need for a customs laboratory in İskenderun in various media organs made it suitable for this function. Also, this is supported by the location being close to the international port and the train station that is used for freight transport. In the project, the Customs Laboratory not only includes parts that are integrated into the structure such as warehouses and laboratories but also distinguishes itself with the separation of the main office from the structure and its differences in the material and structural sense.

The city and industrial areas continued to develop around the site without touching it which turned the site into an “in-between” area and the impact hub project is designed in a way to underline this condition. A passage that allows going through this in-betweenness is achieved with the formed accessible street by the semi-subterranean structure that also allows access to the building from different levels for shade and breezy space in the Mediterranean climate.
